IMPERIAL HOTEL OYA THROW
This Throw design was adapted from the Oya column designs created by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo, Japan, 1915-1922.
Oya is a light lava stone found in Japan that is easily cut or carved.
Mr. Wright and structural engineer, Paul Mueller, engineered a cantilevered, reinforced concrete foundation for the hotel that floated on piers in the unstable soil. This enabled the hotel to survive an earthquake in 1923 and the bombings of World War II.
Although the hotel made it through these difficult circumstances, the pressure of rising land values caused it to be demolished in 1968.
